—Decades-in-the-Making Community Features 345 Residences, 100,000 Square Feet of Retail and 13,000 Square Foot Pedestrian Piazza—
Washington, D.C.—October 19, 2023—Bozzuto and The Chevy Chase Land Company have announced the official grand opening of the highly-anticipated Chevy Chase Lake community.
The shared vision of Bozzuto and The Chevy Chase Land Company, both generationally owned local companies, focused on long-term design and development decisions serving the Chevy Chase neighborhood and community. As Developer, Property Manager, and General Contractor, Bozzuto based Chevy Chase Lake on a framework that preserves the well-established community character, enhances quality of life and connectivity, and creates new choices and opportunities for local shopping, housing, public spaces, and transit.
“The grand opening of Chevy Chase Lake marks the dawn of a vibrant neighborhood renaissance. With diverse housing options, meticulous design, artistic flair, welcoming public spaces, and accessible transportation, Chevy Chase Lake sets a new standard for community living and gathering in our region. Together, with The Chevy Chase Land Company, we are proud to introduce a community that not only meets the needs of today but also paves the way for a more vibrant and inclusive future,” states Toby Bozzuto, President and Chief Executive Officer, Bozzuto.
In 2018, Bozzuto, The Chevy Chase Land Company, and other partners officially broke ground on the development, which includes 100,000-square-feet of retail and three residential buildings focused around a 13,000-square-foot pedestrian piazza with beautiful public green space connected to the Connecticut Avenue Purple Line. The community is anchored by Amazon Fresh grocery alongside vibrant neighborhood-serving retail and restaurants, including locally based merchants Elena James, The Charmery, and Uncorked.
“The transformation of Chevy Chase Lake has had many chapters in its long history and we now come full circle to what was once a destination for community members to gather and share experiences. This modern rebirth of the original vision is the result of innovation and imagination, and has ushered in a new era for Chevy Chase Lake. Along with our partners, we have created not only a destination, but a community. One that will stand the test of time, and continue to celebrate change and the enduring spirit of progress,” adds John Ziegenhein, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Chevy Chase Land Company.
The Barrett and The Claude communities offer 280 thoughtfully designed apartments while The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Chevy Chase features 65 iconic homes, all serving as modern havens for future generations. Each community is shaped by the unique vision of an award-winning designer—RD Jones creates bold, inspiring spaces with a sense of connection at The Barrett, while Patrick Sutton brings an effortless elegance to The Claude. For The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Chevy Chase, Bozzuto sought like-minded partners with similar vision and standards of excellence to make this building an extraordinary experience. It was crucial that the authenticity and integrity of the area be respected, and meaningful architectural ideals maintained. This challenge was met by historic, Connecticut Avenue-inspired exteriors by David M. Schwarz. Bozzuto collaborated with Akseizer Design Group and the Marriot Luxury Brand Team to evoke a story of Chevy Chase’s past, present, and future with rich interior touches and the highest quality conveniences available. Each residence features a spacious outdoor terrace with views of the Town Square or the surrounding neighborhood.
Located at the end of the then-popular Rock Creek Railway streetcar line, the area was named “Chevy Chase Lake” for the artificial lake formed when Coquelin Run was dammed to provide water to cool the turbines that powered the Connecticut Avenue streetcar, which operated from 1892 until 1935—an early example of a transit-oriented development.
No longer the end of the line today, with the construction of the Purple Line station on site, Chevy Chase Lake honors the roots of the original neighborhood where the lake afforded people a place to gather and picnic while the plaza, public green, and retail will provide a new town square for the area.
The recent installation of artist Tom Fruin’s Streetcar in the Town Square celebrates Chevy Chase Lake’s vibrant and connected design while reflecting the area’s history and architecture. Fabricated from highly colored recycled acrylic and salvaged steel, the sculpture casts colorful beams of light during the day and is lit from within at night. The transformation of these reclaimed materials into a symbol of progress inspires viewers to participate in creating a brighter future.
Today, home at Chevy Chase Lake is a culmination of meaningful moments, exceptional surroundings and a deep sense of community based around a vibrant neighborhood and iconic living experiences provided by Bozzuto and The Ritz-Carlton.
